Common Questions
Which pool filter type is best?
It depends on your priorities. DE filters provide the finest filtration (2-5 microns) but require the most maintenance. Cartridge filters filter to 10-15 microns, need no backwashing, and are lowest-maintenance. Sand filters filter to 20-40 microns, are the most common, and are easiest to maintain long-term. See our full comparison guide for the side-by-side breakdown.
Is a DE filter worth the extra maintenance?
For pools where water clarity matters most - showpiece pools, pools used by allergy sufferers, or competition pools - yes. DE filters produce noticeably clearer water. For the average residential family pool, a quality cartridge or sand filter maintained correctly produces perfectly clear water at much lower effort.
Can I switch from a sand filter to a cartridge filter?
Yes, but it requires replacing the entire filter tank and head. The pump, plumbing, and timer can usually stay. Switching from sand to cartridge is a common upgrade, particularly for pool owners who want to reduce water waste from backwashing.
