Finding your filter size: the square footage is printed on the tank label, usually a sticker or embossed plate on the side of the housing near the pressure gauge. It is also part of most model numbers. A Hayward DE4820 is a 48 sq ft filter. A Pentair FNS Plus 60 is 60 sq ft. If the label has faded, look up the model number in the manufacturer’s spec sheet rather than guessing.

How to Add DE After Backwashing

Measuring the right amount is half the job. Getting it onto the grids evenly is the other half.

  1. Measure the DE into a clean bucket. Use the table above and the 0.5 lb scoop. Level the scoops rather than heaping them.
  2. Mix it with water into a slurry. Add roughly a gallon of water per pound of DE and stir until the mixture is smooth and pourable with no dry lumps floating on top.
  3. Start the pump with the valve on FILTER. Never add DE with the valve in BACKWASH, RINSE, or RECIRCULATE. On those settings the powder either goes straight out the waste line or straight back into the pool.
  4. Pour slowly into the skimmer nearest the pump. If your pool has two skimmers, use the one with the strongest suction so the slurry reaches the tank quickly. Spread the pour over 30 to 60 seconds.
  5. Never dump dry powder into the skimmer. Dry DE clumps the moment it hits water, and clumps pack onto the first grid they reach instead of spreading across all of them.
  6. Run 30 minutes and check the pressure. After half an hour the coating has settled. Record the gauge reading as your new clean baseline.

The Slurry Method: Why It Matters

Do not pour dry DE powder directly into the skimmer. Dry DE powder tends to clump when it hits water, and clumps do not coat grids evenly. Uneven coating means some sections of the grid filter fine particles while others do not.

The slurry method:

  1. Measure your DE quantity into a clean bucket
  2. Add warm water (about 1 gallon per pound of DE) and stir vigorously
  3. Continue stirring until the mixture is completely smooth with no lumps
  4. Pour the slurry into the running skimmer slowly over 30 to 60 seconds

What Happens If You Add Too Much or Too Little DE

Too much DE packs the grids tighter than the pump can push water through. Pressure climbs fast, often 4 to 5 PSI within the first week instead of over a month. Keep overloading and the grids stay permanently clogged, because a backwash cannot fully clear DE that has been compacted under pressure. Too little DE leaves patches of grid fabric bare. Those bare patches do not filter, so the water stays slightly hazy no matter how good your chemistry is. Worse, body oils, sunscreen, and lotion go straight into the exposed fabric instead of being trapped in the DE layer. Backwash Frequency: Let the Gauge Decide

The correct trigger for backwashing a DE filter is a pressure rise of 8 to 10 PSI above your clean baseline, not a calendar schedule.

After every backwash and re-charge, note the pressure reading. Write it on waterproof tape on the filter housing. When the gauge reads 8 to 10 PSI above that number, backwash.

For most residential pools, this happens every 4 to 8 weeks during swim season. After a major storm, after a pool party, or at the end of a heavy swim week, pressure can rise faster. In a quiet week, you might go a full month without needing to backwash.

When Backwashing Is Not Enough

Backwashing only reverses water through the grids. It does nothing about the oils, sunscreen, mineral scale, and hair gel residue that soak into the grid fabric over a season, and it does not touch the sludge that settles in the bottom of the tank below the grid assembly.

If your pressure rises back to the backwash trigger level within a few days of backwashing, backwashing alone is no longer sufficient. The grids have accumulated oil and grease that reversed water flow cannot remove.

  1. Turn the pump off and release pressure through the air relief valve
  2. Open the clamp band and remove the top of the filter
  3. Pull the manifold and grids out of the tank
