Sizing the Replacement Correctly
This is where conversions go wrong. Sand filter owners often buy a cartridge filter that “matches” the old tank in price or physical size, and end up with an element that clogs every two weeks.
Size the cartridge to your pump’s flow, not to the old sand filter. The working rules:

The Swap in Outline
This is the shape of the job, not a full step-by-step. If the outline reads as comfortable, it is a reasonable DIY project. If not, a pool tech will do it in 2 to 3 hours.
- Kill power and drain the old tank. Shut off the pump at the breaker, open the sand filter’s drain plug, and let the tank empty.
- Disconnect and remove the sand filter. Cut or unthread the pump-to-valve and valve-to-return connections. A full 24 inch sand filter weighs 300 pounds or more with wet sand in it, so most people scoop the sand out first, then move the empty tank.
- Set the new cartridge filter on the pad. Position it so the inlet and outlet line up as closely as possible with the existing plumbing stubs.
- Adapt the plumbing with unions. Run new PVC from the pump discharge to the filter inlet and from the filter outlet to the return line. Put a union on each side of the filter so future cartridge service and filter replacement never require a hacksaw.
- Skip the multiport valve. A cartridge filter has no backwash cycle, so it needs no multiport. Plumb the pump straight to the filter, or add a simple 2-way valve on the discharge side if you want a service shutoff. If reusing the old multiport is truly unavoidable because of how the pad is plumbed, lock it on RECIRCULATE and never move it, but understand it is now just a flow restriction and a future leak point. Removing it is the better install.
- Fill, pressure-test, and record the baseline. Restart the pump, bleed air at the relief valve, check every joint, and write the clean starting PSI on the tank. That number is your cleaning trigger from now on.
Who Should Not Switch
The conversion is not a universal upgrade. Keep the sand filter if any of these describe your pool.
Heavy debris pools under trees. Constant leaf litter, seed pods, pine needles, and pollen load a cartridge fast. What was supposed to be 3 cleanings a season becomes 10, and each one is a half-hour job. Sand shrugs at debris because clearing it is a 2 minute backwash.
Very large pools. Above roughly 40,000 gallons, the cartridge area needed to keep cleaning intervals reasonable gets expensive, and cleaning a bank of four 100+ sq ft elements is genuinely tedious. At this scale, sand’s simplicity is the better trade for most owners.
